Washington, George (1732-1799) Letters from His Excellency General Washington, to Arthur Young. London: by McMillan, sold by W.J. and J. Richardson, 1801. Octavo, with half-title and large folding map of Mount Vernon, with the legend in Washington's hand in printed facsimile; bound in contemporary half calf and marbled paper boards, 20th century ink ownership inscription at foot of title page, a little minor spotting to contents, generally good, 8 x 5 in. Arthur Young (1741-1820) was a British agriculturist and published author with whom Washington established a lively correspondence during his retirement. With the responsibilities of administering his estate at Mount Vernon, his thoughts turned to gaining an understanding of the most successful modes of farming available. Young provided excellent insights and observations, thoughts and help. Correspondence published here also includes letters from Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson.
