Adams, John (1735-1826) Legal Document Signed, 5 April 1774. Folio sheet with letterpress printing, inscribed on both sides. Regarding a suit brought against Boston bookbinder William MacAlpine by the proprietors of the Presbyterian Church of Long Lane, Boston, completed in Adams's hand, endorsed by him on the verso. Old folds, separation at some folds, repairs on verso, lightly soiled, in half morocco clamshell case, 12 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. In this suit, the church claims that MacAlpine took their sessions books (record books of marriages, baptisms, and deaths), presumably for bookbinding, and failed to return them, despite repeated demands. The church estimates the value of these books at 12,000 pounds. Provenance: The Estate of David Spinney.
