Oil on masonite "Valley Stream at Peaceful Valley Catskills" by Otto Kurth; titled, signed, and dated 1958 verso; signed LR; measures approximately 25-7/8" x 29-3/4" with frame and has a sight image of approximately 19-1/4" x 23"; in good overall condition. Otto Kurth was born in Munich, Germany in 1883. He came to America in 1905 and worked in the Art Department of the New York Times during WWI until 1924. As the Assistant Art Director for Liberty Magazine for 26 years, he also worked as a photo engraver. Kurth and his companion Helen Kroeger began spending summers on the North Fork in the 1930s where they opened their "Anchorage Studio" on Marlene Drive in Mattituck. A close friend and painting companion of Caroline Bell, Kurth was an important member of the Peconic Bay Impressionists. In 1959, the American Photo Engravers selected an oil painting of the Mattituck Presbyterian Church to reproduce on the cover of their December 1959 magazine. This same painting was used as a Christmas Card sold by the ladies of the church. Kurth was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the American Artists Professional League. He died in 1965.
