French, late 19th century. A carved giltwood fire screen, having a carved dot and dash frame with a curved crest rail mounted with a rocaille, acanthus, and floral swag finial, resting on carved and beaded legs with acanthus tip bun feet, inset with a later hand-embroidered needlepoint panel depicting a Japanese landscape of houses on a river or lake amidst lush vegetation, with a pagoda, a torii gate, and guideposts. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 58", width 38", depth 17".
