Attributed to Charles Herbel (French, 1656-1703) Portrait of a Gentleman Signed or inscribed "CAROLUS HERBEL/MAR... " on the portrait cameo held in the sitter's left hand. Oil on canvas, 38 1/2 x 30 1/2 in. (98.0 x 77.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined onto wood panel, retouch, surface bloom, stable craquelure, surface grime. Provenance: A Massachusetts estate. N.B. Little is known about Charles Herbel. Born in Nancy, he is listed as a history painter who worked in Vienna for Emperor Leopold the First and in Nancy for the Duke of Lorraine Charles V.
