Carved and Painted Wood Head with Cap, probably early 20th century, all-over dark paint, with stand, (chip to back of cap), ht. 7, wd. 6, dp. 2 in. Provenance: James Kronen, Raymond Saroff/Howard Rose collection, Aarne Anton/American Primitive Gallery. Literature and Exhibitions: Raymond Saroff and Howard Rose were among the earliest collectors of American folk art. Rose, a novelist educated at the Art Institute of Chicago, was an important intellectual contributor to the theoretical debate about the aesthetic value of folk art. The Saroff and Rose collection was featured in the exhibition "The Fine Art of American Folk," The Edith C. Blum Institute Bard College, 1990. Coinciding with the exhibition, Rose published UNEXPECTED ELOQUENCE: THE ART IN AMERICAN FOLK ART, Selections from the Howard Rose/Raymond Saroff Folk Art Collection, (New York, 1989), illustrating many of the objects in the exhibition, including this one.
