Austrian Arts & Crafts Crewel Embroidered Coverlet, Wanda, Eugenia, and Bronia Kofler, Kofler Studios, Vienna, Austria, c. 1928, abstract design incorporating stylized flowers, trees, animals, stars, and geometric motifs, wool yarn worked in shades of red, green, peach, brown, blue, cream, and taupe, with a brown border, linen backing with gold silk lining, 9 ft. x 6 ft. 6 in. Note: "Wanda and her two sisters designed and produced unique hand-spun, knitted, and embroidered objects and wearables in the Modernist "Arts Decoratifs" style introduced by the Weiner-Werksttte movement of the period. Many of their designs were inspired by elements from nature, combining simple abstract shapes with stylized motifs such as leaves, trees, animals, fruits, hearts, and stars. In the 1940s [the sisters] moved from headquarters in Vienna and Paris to a New York studio at 49th Street and Madison Avenue. Here their work was sought by private collectors as well as by Elizabeth Arden and Saks Fifth Avenue, until their retirement in the 1950s. The last of the Kofler sisters died in 1974."-Eve Stwertka, second cousin to the sisters, Great Neck, New York.
