Attributed to Giuseppe Fedi (Italian, ac. 1792-1819) Palladium of Boston... Unsigned, titled below, ship shown broadside and stern flying American flags. Mixed media including watercolor, gouache, and pen and ink on paper, sight 19 x 26 3/4 in., framed. Condition: Small repaired tears and losses l.r. and u.l., scattered retouch and abrasions, overall toning, not examined out of frame. N.B. The Palladium was built in 1816 in Salem to run as a packet between Salem and Liverpool, carrying both passengers and mail. This was an ambitious project conceived of by a syndicate of Salem businessmen. However, Salem, as a shallow port, was not a suitable terminus for a packet line, and the project was never realized. In fact, the Palladium first sailed to Calcutta as an East Indiaman. The builder, Enos Briggs, considered the ship the finest and most original of his credence. Here the ship is shown entering the port of Naples. One signed work and several attributed to Fedi are housed in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum.
