Attributed to William Bradford (American, 1823-1892) The Whaleship Gay Head. Unsigned, ship identified on plaque affixed to frame. Oil on canvas, 19 x 29 3/4 in., in a period carved gilt gesso frame. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, and craquelure. N.B. The ship is shown entering New Bedford harbor. William Barstow of Mattapoisett built the vessel in 1852 for J.R. Wood and Co. of New Bedford. The ship's figurehead depicts a Native American warrior holding a spear.
