Brigadeir General Hobart Moore; a presentation Staff & Field Officer's Sword by Ames (Model 1860), with brass guards with cast Eagle and Shield motifs, the etched blade with U.S. and Brig. Gen. Hobart Moore, in brass scabbard with cast and engraved decoration and presentation inscription Presented To Brig. Gen. Hobart Moore By Brig Genl. I. S. Burrell & Staff Sept. 27, 1876...... followed by the names and positions of eight officers, overall length 37 1/2 in. Provenance: Hobart Moore (1832-1894) a Sudbury, Massachusetts native, Moore was a Captain of a battalion in the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, Boston recruiting officer and an instructor of military tactics for the Union Army during the Civil War. He was also the first Teacher of Military Drill for the Boston School Committee and first Professor of Military Science for MIT. Latter he became Commander of the M.V.M.
