Abel Buel Moore (American, 1806-1879) Portrait of Alexander Bliss (1804-1859). Unsigned, artist and sitter identified on later label affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 24 1/2 x 20 1/4 in., in a gilt gesso frame. Condition: Small puncture to center, varnish inconsistencies, minor retouch, losses, craquelure. N.B. Moore, a native of Rupert, Vermont, was active in Troy, New York from 1823 to 1875, with sojourns in New York (1858), and in Albany (1858-1860). He studied under John Quidor. The label also notes that Bliss was a native of Washington County, New York, and dates the portrait 1824.
