Elizabeth Wentworth Roberts (American, 1871-1927) Morning Quiet/Figures on a Beach Monogrammed "ERW" l. l. Oil on canvas, 23 3/4 x 30 1/4 in. (60.3 x 76.8 cm), in a signed "Paul Carter Goodnow" frame. Condition: Craquelure. N.B. Elizabeth Wentworth Roberts moved to Concord, Massachusetts, at the turn of the century, with her lifelong companion Grace Keyes. Starting in 1903, the two would travel to Annisquam, Massachusetts, where Roberts started painting her famous beach scenes. Some of the first of these beach scenes were included in the 1921 Philadelphia Ten Exhibition. One Philadelphia Inquirer reviewer wrote of the beach scenes, "Charming in their hazy simplicity, with a hint of Whistler, are the sand figures of Elizabeth Wentworth Roberts." So well received were these pieces, that Doll & Richards Gallery, Boston, hosted a one woman show Figures on the Sand . A similar composition was included in the exhibition A Studio of Her Own, held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2001. The above piece is believed to be a view of Wingaersheek Beach, Gloucester.
