Pocket Compass and an Educational Compass Drawing, America, late 19th century, the compass with 1 3/4 in. printed dial divided in four quadrants, mahogany case with hinged lid, together with a pen and ink rendering of a marine compass inscribed "for James Edward Whitney Jr. 1874," and a paper inscribed with all the compass points "...the way the Sailor Pronounces the names of the points of the compass.," in an embossed leather-covered case, compass 2 5/8 in. square, drawing case 4 3/4 x 3 3/4 in.
