Ossip Zadkine (Russian/French, 1890-1967) Factory View Signed and dated "O. Zadkine 23" in ink l.l. Gouache on paper, 13 x 10 3/4 in. (33.0 x 27.3 cm), matted. Condition: Toning, foxing, handling creases, deformations to paper, areas of flaking. N.B. This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of Zadkine's works by Tjerk Wiegersma. Zadkine was of Bellarussian heritage but lived most of his life in France. His sculptural and painting style evolved greatly over his long career and was deeply influenced by contemporary world events, especially World War I. Zadkine's post-war works were highly Cubist, in contrast to his more realistic pre-war works. Because Zadkine believed that emotional expression was rooted in the human figure, he believed that he could "provoke emotions" through the lines and forms of his art in order to "construct the human object."
