Chippendale Carved Mahogany Bureau Table, New York, 1755-1790, the shaped top with ogee molded edges overhangs the case of blocked drawers with beaded surrounds and the sliding tray drawer which is above the kneehole and has raised fluid foliate and leaf carving over the kneehole space which has a rear flat door of solid mahogany opening to a three shelved interior, on the heavy molded base with scalloped knee brackets on six square ball and claw feet, old surface, original brass, (minor restoration including an installed replaced backboard, the original accompanies this lot), ht. 33, wd. 34 1/8, dp. 22 1/4 in. Literature: American Furniture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Morrison Heckscher (Random House, New York) plate 136, p. 213 is nearly identical to this lot in its form, embellishment, construction and materials. Provenance: This piece descended in the family from Mary Pearson Murdock (1843-1923), who was born in Hyde Park, New York, at the family seat, called "Placentia." Mary Murdock's property book entitled "Belongings from the W. Bayard sale" listed this piece according to her great granddaughter, the consignor.
