Edmund C. Coates (American, 1816-1871) Annunciation Signed and dated "E.C.Coates 1865" l.r. Oil on canvas (oval format), 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.2 cm), framed. Condition: Repaired punctures, retouch, surface grime. N.B. Although he was known primarily as a Hudson River School painter, Coates often tinged his compositions with an old master sensibility, through the inclusion of Italianate landscape elements and mythological and religious themes. Such is the case here. Though the main subject of the work is clearly landscape, the introduction of the figures in the foreground gives the painting a European flavor that would have been perceived as more cultured to a nineteenth century eye.
