James Houston (Canadian, b. 1921) Snowy Owl Titled, inscribed, dated and signed "...West Baffin Island, NWT - 1962 Houston" l.l. Gouache on gray paper, sight size 11 1/2 x 15 in. (29.2 x 38.1 cm), framed. Condition: Not examined out of frame. N.B. James Houston was born in Toronto and studied at the Ontario College of Art, as well as in Paris and Tokyo. In 1948, he traveled to the Arctic and lived among the Eskimo-Inuit community as a civil administrator for the Canadian government. As the chairman of the Canadian Eskimo Arts Council, he assisted in organizing exhibitions for Inuit artists. For this work, Houston was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1972. He has also been a designer for Steuben Glass since 1962.
