Federal Needlework and Watercolor Picture of Moses in the Bulrushes, worked by Lucy Howard at the Mary Balch School, Providence, Rhode Island, c. 1806, including silk, chenille, watercolor, and pencil, depicting a classically dressed woman with a baby in a basket in a verdant landscape; watercolor was used for her features, the water, and the sky, unfinished, (reframed, some spotting on the surround), 17 3/4 x 15 3/4 in. Provenance: Descended in the James and Lucy Howard family of Hampton, Connecticut. After Lucy attended the Balch School, she married and moved to Abington, Connecticut. The consignor purchased this needlework from the Howard family.
