Chinese School, 19th Century Portrait of the Clipper Ship The Nancy Pendleton of Belfast, Maine. 1870's. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 23 x 32 1/4 in. (sight), in an elaborately carved original Chinese frame. Condition: Craquelure, minor edge losses. Note: The Nancy Pendleton was launched from the shipyard of Capt. Henry McGilvery at Belfast by Master Builder George A. Carver in August, 1871. She was built for and managed by Capt. James G. Pendleton of Searsport, and measured 1,449 tons gross and 1,385 tons net register. The Nancy Pendleton hailed from Belfast, and it is said that, after the sale in 1885 of the 1,491-ton ship Cora (built at Belfast in 1869), the vessel was the only full-rigged ship registered at that port. The Nancy was a general trader on the Seven Seas and for over twenty years made money for her owners. She carried well and showed fair speed for a ship of her fullness and spar plan. In April of 1893, when twenty-one and a half years of age, she was sold in New York for conversion into a coal barge.
