François Xavier Habermann, engraver (Augsburg, Late 18th Century) Vue de Boston: Vers le Cale du Port. Identified in inscriptions in the matrix. Copper print engraving with hand-coloring on paper, this view or vue d'optique was designed to create the illusion of perspective when viewed with a zograscope using a series of reflecting mirrors to enhance the illusion of depth in the print. The view was a fictitious illustration by an artist to portray an image of American scenes at the time of the Revolution. It was inexpensive entertainment for citizens in England and Europe to view these images the drawing room, print shops, and traveling fairs; sheet size 13 1/4 x 17 in., framed. Condition: Laid down, repaired tear at center, background sky whitened.
