George Nakashima (1905-1990) Six grass seated chairs c. 1949 American black walnut, each with curved rail over two spindles on the back, each side with two spindles, twine seat with tapering dowel form legs, R1173 written near the joint of the back left leg and seat, two chairs with twine replaced, some twine breaks, ht. 27 in. Provenance: The family of Mr. George Levy. Mr. Levy was an architect in Elizabeth, New Jersey, he hired George Nakashima as a draftsman post WWII; and he recognized Mr. Nakashima's talent at a difficult time in American history. In appreciation for Mr. Levy's kind consideration, Nakashima made these chairs as a gift for the Levy family.
