Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) Bearded Man (Homme Barbu) Signed and dated "Picasso le 1. 9.70." l.r. Blue ballpoint pen on paper, sight size 5 1/2 x 5 1/4 in. (14.0 x 13.2 cm), framed. Condition: Not examined out of frame. N.B. A copy of a photo-certificate signed by Claude Ruiz Picasso accompanies the lot. N.B. The "bearded man" figures into Picasso's oeuvre as early as the 1920s, with scenes exploring the artist-muse relationship. It recurs in Picasso's depictions of Greek mythological figures, and has been speculated at times by some scholars to be a representation of the artist himself. Although the work has not been removed from its frame, there are some very light handling creases.
