Born in Owosso, Michigan, Impressionist painter Frederic C. Frieseke was a leading member of the Giverny Group , a group of American artists working in France, which also included Richard Miller, Lawton Parker, Karl Anderson, and Guy Rose. As a young man, Frieseke moved to Paris where he studied at the Académie Julian and then with James A. M. Whistler at the Académie Carmen. He was elected an academician of the National Academy of Design in New York, and was one of the few Americans to be entered into the Society National des Beaux Arts in Paris. Influenced by the soft palettes of Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet, Frieseke often painted sitters bathed in warm sunlight.
