Alexander Stirling Calder (American, 1870-1945) The Warrior Signed "Calder" on the figure's left hip, inscribed "A. Stirling Calder Copyright 1912 GORHAM FOUNDERS Q309-3" at the lower edge. Bronze with a green patina, height 27 in. (68.6 cm). Condition: Good. The work is a very late or posthumous cast. Provenance: A private New England collection. N.B. Alexander Stirling Calder is part of a legacy of sculptors; he is the son of artist Alexander Milne Calder and the father of Alexander "Sandy" Calder (best known for his mobiles and stabiles). Calder enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts at age sixteen, and studied drawing with Thomas Eakins. Calder then traveled to Paris to study at the Academie Julian under Henri Chapu, as well as at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts with Alexandre Falguiere. Although most of his career was spent in New York, Calder also spent many years working in California. Some abrasion of patina under "Gorham Founders" mark. Bronze cast base is filled with putty-like material (not plaster). With felt pad. The work is very late or posthumous cast.
