Note: The present map constitutes the first 18th century general map of New England and is likely based on Philip Lea's 1680 map. Cotton Mather, whose primary notable act was his participation in the Salem Witch trials, was instrumental in establishing New England as a thriving center of commerce and culture as well as one of the founding members of Yale University.
