Carl (Wilhelm Emile) Milles (1875-1955) Naid plaster sculpture Sweden, c. 1940 Full-figure stylized mermaid holding a fish in each hand, and having a double tail, in green patina, signed CM, restored, small nicks to patina, mounted on circular plastic base, approx. ht. 16 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Meyric Rogers. The photograph is of Meyric Rogers in the studio of Carl Milles with this sculpture. This is purported to be a submission model for one of the figures in the Aloe Plaza fountain in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Rogers wrote Carl Milles An Interpretation of His Work, (The Art Institute of Chicago, New Haven. Yale University Press, 1940.) Carl Milles is famous for his work in bronze as a sculptor and medalist. He was born in Sweden and became a United States citizen while at Cranbrook Academy. His fountains may be seen in St. Louis, Missouri; Stockholm, Sweden; and Falls Church, Virginia.
