Ed Rossbach (1914-2002) "Chinese Bowl" Ash, paint, paper, and foil basket Western United States, 1989 Square form of woven splint covered with paper, painted in turquoise and decorated with orange koi, outlined in black, with foil accents, ht. 6 1/8, dia. 6 3/4 in. Rossbach was a pioneer in the use of nontraditional basket material. He researched ancient civilizations and incorporated that knowledge with use of contemporary materials to create his own innovative style. Public collections of Rossbach's work are held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Holland; The American Craft Museum, New York City; and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.
