Edward Everard Arnold (New Orleans, 1824-1866) The Schooner H. B. Metcalf off Havana with Fort La Cabana in the Distance. Signed and dated "Arnold 1859 pinxt" l.r.; titled "Sch'r H.B. Metcalf, Capt'n Charles L. Murden." below. Oil on canvas, 30 x 40 in., in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Two patch repairs, scattered retouch, minor paint losses. Note: Edward Everard Arnold was born in Württemberg, Germany. He began his career as a lithographer and a landscape and portrait painter. He settled in New Orleans around 1846, where he became known for his marine paintings and ship portraits, and also spent three years painting in Havana. The schooner H. B. Metcalf was built in Bristol, Rhode Island, in 1856, and her home port was Providence, Rhode Island.
