Richard Wiggin Johnson (American, 1919-2005), After Archibald M. Willard (1836-1918) Spirit of '76 Signed l.l. Oil on canvas mural, the central portion depicting a copy of the c. 1875 painting by Archibald M. Willard "Spirit of '76" (previously known as Yankee Doodle); the beginning of the battle at the Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts, and Paul Revere's ride to Lexington, Massachusetts to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British troops were marching to arrest them, 4 ft. x 14 ft. 6 in., unframed. Condition: Minor tears on edges. Note: This mural came from the Daniel Fuller house in Middleton, Massachusetts. Richard Wiggin Johnson was born in Philadelphia in 1918, moved to New England in 1935 and graduated from the Vesper George School of Art in Boston. He was an advertising artist for the Towle Silversmiths in Newburyport, Massachusetts until the start of World War II and served in the U.s. Army Air Corps. He exhibited in art shows throughout New England, and had his own studio/gallery in Southport, Maine. He died in August of 2005.
