Abbott Fuller Graves (American, 1859-1936) On the Deck Signed "Abbott Graves" l. l. Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in. (61.0 x 50.8 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, fine scattered craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Boston School painter Abbott Fuller Graves was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, and began his schooling at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1884 he traveled to Paris and Italy, where he studied Impressionism with fellow Boston artist Edmund Tarbell. Graves returned to Boston to teach art with Childe Hassam at the Cowles Art School, however he continued to travel back and forth to Paris, where he studied at the Academie Julian. He is best known for his figural compositions set in bright and sunny landscapes. His works fuse the realism of his Boston School roots and the Impressionist style that he studied in his time abroad.
