Attributed to John Greenwood (Boston, 1727-1792) Portrait of a Lady in Blue with her Cat. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 31 x 25 1/8 in., unframed. Condition: Retouch, portions of canvas loose from stretcher. Note: Born in Boston in 1727, Jonathan Greenwood worked as an engraver, and was a self-taught portrait painter there during his early career. In 1752, Greenwood departed Boston for Surinam on the northeast shoulder of South America, where he painted portraits for the next five years. By 1758, Greenwood was working as an engraver in Holland, and later ended up in London, where he became an art dealer in 1762 .
