Classical Mahogany Carved and Mahogany Veneer Brass-inlaid Work Table possibly Michael Allison or Duncan Phyfe, New York, c. 1820, the hinged rectangular cross-banded top opens to a fitted interior with an adjustable work surface, compartments for writing and sewing implements, the side compartments lined with robin's-egg blue wallpaper, on a conforming table, the front with panels centering a compartmented drawer with thread spool, the lower edge with an edge of brass die-cut inlay, on demilune and reeded wells on vase and ring-turned acanthus-carved supports and acanthus -carved legs, ending in hairy-paw feet joined by a acanthus ring-turned medial stretcher, (refinished), ht. 30 1/4, wd. 27 3/4, dp. 16 1/2 in. Literature: A similar table is illustrated in Nancy McClelland's Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency fig. 179, p. 195, and The American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1985, fig. 232, p. 149. Another even more nearly identical table is in the Permanent Collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and in Celia Jackson Otto's American Furniture of the Nineteenth Century, fig. 138, p. 63. However, the stretchers on each of these tables are flat boards rather than the reeded and carved stretcher on this example.
