Engraved Gorget, late 18th century, the breast plate, engraved with a crown over a monogram and laurel wreath, 4 1/4 x 3 1/8 in. Note: After armor went out of use in the late 16th century, higher ranking officers still retained the breast plate during the 17th century, and in the 18th century it became only a symbol, a miniature breast plate worn by officers only when on duty.
