Allens Paper Lacquer Phonograph Horn, by Wm. J. Schroth, Kobe, Japan , patd. 1906, the bell-bottomed horn with original black lacquer, internal painted decoration of flowers and bird in flight in red and bichromate gold and silver, and maker's transfer, lg. 27 x dia. 14 in., (rim retouched or possibly cut down). Note: Allen's Paper Lacquer Horn was initially marketed by Edison's San Francisco agent, Peter Bacigalupi, and later excclusively by Byron Mauzy of San Francisco. It was advertised as being the work of Japanese artists, "made by hand, of a Japanese rice fiber material, finished with a beautiful lacquer, put on by a new patented process in a permanent glossy jet black color."
