Elizabeth Quale O'Neill Verner (American, 1883-1979) Selling Flowers Signed "E O N Verner" l. r. Pastel on silk mounted onto board, sight size 15 1/2 x 14 in. (39.4 x 35.6 cm), in the original frame. Condition: Not examined out of frame. N.B. Elizabeth Verner lived and worked in Charlestown, South Carolina, and devoted her career to the depiction and preservation of the people and buildings of her native city. She was born in Charlestown in 1883, and was encouraged to pursue art as a child by her maternal grandfather, Henry Franklin Baker, and fellow Charlestown artist, Alice Ravenel Huger Smith. After attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Verner returned to the city, where she worked primarily with pastel and etching. She was influenced by the work of Boston-based artist Laura Coombs Hills, also noted for her work with pastels. Verner frequently depicted the female vendors at the flower market, whom she felt were an important part of the Charlestown culture. She also is noted for drawing with pastel onto silk mounted onto panel, a technique which she purportedly deemed 'vernercolor.'
