Thomas Luny (British, 1759-1837) The American Brig Vixen Passing Sambro Lighthouse, Nova Scotia Signed and dated "Luny 1833" l. l., identified on a presentation plaque and on a label affixed to the reverse, a label from The Parker Gallery, London, affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 27 x 40 in. (68.6 x 101.6 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, surface grime. Provenance: A private Midwestern collection. N.B. Born in Cornwall in 1759, Luny first apprenticed to Francis Holman in London. Strongly influenced by Holman, he remained in his studio until 1777, when he left for France. In 1780, Luny set up his own studio in London and began to exhibit regularly at the Royal Academy. By the 1790s he was travelling throughout Europe and North America, possibly as part of the Royal Navy. Luny returned to England, settling in Teignmouth, where he received numerous commissions. He continued to paint ship portraits and scenes of naval battles for the remainder of his career.
