Mahogany Apothecary Chest of Dr. Samuel Fisk Green, with fitted interior containing numerous stoppered bottles, and newspaper-lined drawer below, wd. 16 in., (surface stripped). Provenance: A typed history accompanying the box identifies its original owner as Dr. Samuel Fisk Green (1822 - 1884) of Worcester, Massachusetts. Traveling to Ceylon in 1847, he began his practice in Mapepy, Jaffna, where he founded a hospital. His life's work was the translation of Western medical treatises into vernacular Tamil. The box descended through the Green family, all doctors, until its donation to a Northeastern institution.
