Attributed to Henry Benbridge (American, 1744-1812) Portrait of James McNutt Esquire of Virginia. Subject and artist identified on plaque below and on label affixed to the stretcher inscribed "James McNutt Esqre. of Augusta Co. Virginia in 1780/Henry Benbridge pinxt." Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 in., in a period molded giltwwod frame. Condition: Relined, patch repair at center, minor scattered retouch. Note: James Mcnutt was born in 1740, married Margaret McElroy in 1768 and resided in Augusta, Virginia. Together they had three children. James McNutt died September 6, 1811 and is buried at Old Providence Church, Rockbridge, Virginia. About 3/4 in dia. retouch to lip area, otherwise small areas of retouch primarily background edges.
