Italian School, early 19th Century Brig Good Hope. R.F. Chase, Master, Entering and Leaving the Harbour of Palermo. Unsigned, vessel identified below, on bow of foreground vessel inscribed "Good Hope,"and on the stern of retreating vessel to left inscribed "Good Hope Boston." Watercolor and gouache on paper, 19 3/4 x 26 1/2 in., in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Lower left margin removed, 3 x 4 1/2 empty area backed with thin card and paper tacked on edges with glue, minor toning, minor small stains in sky. Not laid down, 3 x 4 1/2 in. area at lower rt. corner was removed at some point, the toning is primarily on margin under image,small light stains u.r. and c.rt. sky appprox. 1/2 x 1/8 in.
