Verne, Jules (1828-1905), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea , Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1873 [but 1872], original gilt lettered pictorial blue cloth with jellyfish to cover, first American edition, variant A, with 109 steel engravings, 8vo, (spine head and foot with fraying, minor rubbing to cover, signatures becoming loose). Taves & Michaluk V006; Myers 56 ("a copy has been reported, certainly rare.") Note: This edition utilizes the same sheets from the 1872 London edition printed by Sampson, Low & Company and likely printed in November of that year. It is speculated that a fire prevented circulation of this edition and it was quickly followed by another edition in 1873 by George Smith & Co.
