George III Cross-stitch Sampler, c. 1797, depicting a central three-masted schooner, surrounded by motifs of castles, lighthouses, flower-filled baskets, swans, and animals, mottoed "May peace and plenty on our nation smile, and trade with commerce, bless the British Isles," and signed "Mary Anne Dundas Finished this Sampler, June 12, 1797, Aged 8 Years," in burlwood frame, sight size 16 x 12, frame 20 1/4 x 16 in. Provenance: Bearing paper label to reverse stating that Mary Anne Dundas was the daughter of Admiral Dundas of the Royal Navy. Evidence of tack holes to edges where previously mounted, and some fading, but otherwise in decent condition. 19th century bird''s eye maple frame.
