Framed School Boy Calligraphic Exercise, Simeon Brooks, Scituate, Massachusetts, March 31, 1789, ink on laid paper depicting arched pillars with verses entitled "FEAR" and "HOPE" over an alphabet, signed and dated l. r. (laid down, toning, foxing, edge stains), 14 1/2 x 11 3/4 in, in a later wood frame. Note: The reverse backing paper is inscribed with a genealogical listing by a descendant of Simeon Clark, which traces Simeon's genealogy to John Alden and Priscilla Mullins who were among the Mayflower passengers who settled Plymouth Colony, in the New World, in 1620. Accompanying the exercise is a paper inscribed with the "Arms and Pedigree of the Southworth Family," an extensive genealogy in which this relationship is portrayed.
