Pair of Federal Inlaid Mahogany Card Tables, labeled Joseph Short, Newburyport, Massachusetts, c. 1795, the folding tops with ovolo corners and edges of inlaid stringing, on conforming aprons bordered by stringing and crossbanding, all on square tapering legs with paneled dies and stringing, underside of each top bears cabinetmaker's label "WARRANTED CABINET WORK/OF ALL KINDS/Made and Sold, BY/JOSEPH SHORT/At his Shop, Merrimack Street, between/ Market Square and Brown's Wharf./ALL orders for Work will receive grate-/ful attention.," the label further inscribed in pen in script "Newburyport," old refinish, (minor imperfections), ht. 28 1/2, wd. 34 1/4, dp. 17 in. Top half of each table unbleached where there were doilies, and both tops are a little warped; table A- with a ten-inch long shrinkage crack on top surface, the lower top has two dark stains- 2 x 1 in., two shrinkage cracks 7 and 1 1/2 in., lower half of table top constructed of two pieces of wood. Table B- the top half with small 1/3 in. depression, lower tabletop with 7 in. crack at a knot, some small stains, lacks one glue block, small pieces missing from crossbanding.
