Transfer Decorated Mug Depicting "Old Women Ground Young," England, late 18th century, pearlware mug decorated with a scene of a group of old women climbing a ladder into a hopper while a man turns a crank, the women appear young as they emerge from the bottom of the hopper, with young men assisting and giving them romantic attentions, inscription below reads "Good lackaday cries out the grinder, I shan't want work, indeed I find sir; This grinding is a bonny trade, my fortune shortly will be made," (minor glaze wear on rim and handle edges), ht. 4 3/4 in.
