Fine Early Victorian Mahogany Metamorphic "Jupe" Dining Table, c. 1840-50, with radiating top formed with pie-slice type leaves, with central brass medallion stamped "Johnstone, Jeanes & Co., 67 New Bond Street, London," opening to accomodate three separate sets of leaves, each numbered 1 through 8 to conform with numbers stamped on the base, all on five baluster-turned circular pedestals resting upon an X-form base applied with circular roundels, ht. 28 1/2; dia. closed 68, with smallest leaves 81, with second set of leaves 86 1/2, fully extended 89 in. Provenance: By repute, Fort Belvedere, Surrey, Great Britain, a royal residence from 1750-1976. Fort Belvedere is known for being the home of King Edward VIII. Overall very good to excellent shape. Two "tips" to the pie slices replaced (about 3 inches for each) and one is fragmented. The mechanism works fairly well but requires a couple of people to affectuate each change. Color is even and consistent and only changes slightly with different leaves are added. All leaves are numbered and original as well as free from warpage. There exist a very small amount of gapping when a couple of leaves are inserted, but it is remarkably consistent. Two of the posts are cracked but with no losses. Provenance Note: On an early 20th century note labeled "Basel Bundestrasse 17" contains the following note in addition to instructions: "This table came from Fort Belvedere and was constantly used by King Edward VIII there.
