Viennese Violin, Nicolaus Sawicki, Vienna, 1846, labeled NICOLAUS SAWICKI, FECIT, VIENAE ANNO 1846, NS, length of two-piece back 14 in. , 355 mm., with case. Karol Mikolaj Sawicki (1792, Lvov-1850, Vienna) is now recognized as one of the best Viennese makers of the nineteenth century. Sawicki was one of the early caretakers of Nicolo Paganini's "Il Cannone" Guarneri del Gesu violin, and installed the 1828 fingerboard that is presently on the instrument. Paganini was a great admirer of his work, and called him "an extrordinary genius". Sawicki also made several copies of the "The Cannon", including an example from 1829 which is played by violinist Sergio Luca. pegbox bushings, original neck, repaired saddle crack 4 cm on treble side, repaired wing crack on treble side, repaired face crack approx. 8 cm, lower bout on base side.
