Nantucket Purse Basket, made by Jose Formoso Reyes, Nantucket, 1975, round form, the cover with a carved ivory whale mounted on a round walnut plaque, ivory latch and handle pegs, securing swing handle, the base inscribed "MADE IN NANTUCKET JOSE FORMOSO REYES 1975," ht. with handle down 5 1/2, dia. 9 1/4 in. Note: Jose Reyes (1902-1980) was the first Nantucket basketmaker to make a woman's purse, around 1948. very good condition, some unobtrusive age cracks on ivory, otherwise no breaks, repairs, or losses.
