Paint-decorated "Ontario Steamboat Co. " Box, 1859, original surface, (imperfections), ht. 16, wd. 56 1/4, dp. 20 1/4 in. Note: The Ontario Steamboat Company, an American firm, owned four ships: the Niagara, Bay State, Ontario , and Cataract . The company's superintendent was Horatio Nelson Throop of Pultneyville, New York. In fact, he is thought to have been the first person born there. The son of a sailor, Throop continued his family's tradition as a ship builder and captain of steamships. Additionally, Captain Throop participated in the Underground Railroad transporting fugitive slaves from Pultneyville to Canada. The interior dividers and lids are missing;
