Pinkham Family Record, attributed to the "Heart and Hand Artist" (Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, ac. 1830-1856), Rochester, New Hampshire, dated Nov 11, 1852, watercolor and ink on paper commemorating the births and marriages of Wells R. Pinkham and Martha P. Gray of Durham and Strafford, New Hampshire, respectively, and the births of their seven children; the top panel ornamented with blue swags, and the register with weeping willow trees and a monument, 13 3/8 x 9 7/8 in., housed in likely original grain-painted wooden frame. Condition: Minor stains, lower edge trimmed. Literature: A family record executed by the same artist is illustrated in By Good Hands: New Hampshire Folk Art, a cooperative exhibition catalogue with The Currier Gallery of Art, University Art Galleries, University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire, 1989-90, p. 38; also in Folk Hearts: A Celebration of the Heart Motif in American Folk Art, by Cynthia V. A. Schaffner and Susan Klein, Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1984, p. 55. Moisture stains on lower portion of register and upper left corner, the bottom edge was trimmed to painted border to which a piece of paper has been applied to the lower edge to extend the paper, and is fairly unobtrusive, frame has old glass, work is not laid down.
