Attributed to George G. Hartwell (Massachusetts, 1815-1901) Portrait of a Bearded Gentleman Holding a Book. Unsigned. Oil on artist board, c. 1840, 19 1/2 x 13 1/2 in., in a period molded and gilded wood frame. Condition: Minor retouch to background, craquelure. Note: George G. Hartwell was a member of the Prior-Hamblin group of painters. He was related to William Matthew Prior by marriage and painted signs and portraits in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and Auburn, Maine.
